The Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) finally acted tough and stopped the sale of fish by the roadside and also moved the municipal fish vendors back into the municipal fish market on Tuesday.
Admitting that this action had been long overdue, CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar said he had personally approached fish vendors of Municipal fish market who used to squat outside the market to sell fish.
“Their only demand was that the CMC should first stop the practice of selling fish by the roadsides and since they do not get customers coming inside the market, they were forced to sit outside,” said Naikgaunkar.
“I approached fish vendors selling fish along the highway from Nagorcem to Xeller and advised them to stop occupying the space as it causes traffic chaos. Their contention was they are not allowed inside the municipal market, which we agreed to look upon in future.”
Naikgaunkar said on Monday evening, all were told not to occupy any space along the highway, while municipal fish vendors were asked to move inside the market.
“They acted on our request on Tuesday and no fish-selling activities were permitted across the highway. We have given an assurance that the municipal fish market will be cleaned on a daily basis, and fish vendors are provided with one set of toilet keys to the nearby vegetable market,” said Naikgaunkar.
The CMC chairperson also informed that the weekly Saturday bazaar will also be set up inside the vegetables market complex and no vendors will be allowed by the roadside at Chaudi.
“Our municipality has been adjudged as the cleanest in the country and we must live up to that reputation.”
Meanwhile, there has been widespread appreciation over the action taken by the CMC to ease the congested commercial Chaudi town.
“We had been awaiting this action since long and now motorists and shoppers visiting Chaudi town are happy with the move by Chaudi councillor and CMC Chairperson Ramakant Naikgaunkar,” stated Shankar Naik of Chaudi.
