Quarrel over loan amount leads to murder of man

MARGAO
Peace was shattered in Margao around midnight after a quarrel between two scrap collectors over returning money amounting to Rs 1000 ended in a murder of a 45-year old man at Khareband.

Within three hours of the crime, a Margao police team headed by police station in-charge, PI Sachin Narvekar, nabbed the accused who was hiding at the Margao railway station premises.

Investigation revealed that the quarrel broke out over repayment of Rs 1000 between a scrap collector and his friend before the former stabbed the latter to death

The incident is believed to have occurred at around 11 pm on Saturday. The accused, Yellappa Karbal, owed around Rs 1000 to the deceased, Kumar.

As the accused failed to return the money, the duo was involved in a quarrel over the last one week. They were residing on the footpaths along the Khareband road.

On Saturday night, the victim is believed to have told a bar owner that he was stabbed by the accused with a knife. The victim was rushed to the Hospicio hospital, but died on the way.

After receiving information past midnight, the police launched a manhunt to track down the accused, who was in the process of fleeing to his native state, Bagalkot-Karnataka.

A police team is believed to have first got in touch with the bar owner and after obtaining details headed to the Margao railway station premises.

The LIB team of Goraknath Gawas, HC Dilkush Velip, PC Vishal Prabhu, PC Kalpesh Kholkar under the guidance of PI Sachin Narvekar and support of PSI Sagar Dhatkar, PSI Vishwajit Dhavlikar and HC Shamir managed to apprehend the accused hiding at the ongoing construction work in front of the railway station.

While the manhunt to nab the accused had started past midnight, the police team achieved success only at dawn on Sunday.

Police officials admit that they were fortunate enough to nab the accused as he was hiding at the station premises, waiting for the trains to make good his escape from the state.
