Quepem tackles open defecation
CURCHOREM: A one-day workshop under 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' to make Quepem area free of open defecation was organised in Quepem.
Chief Officer Pramod Dessai said about 232 beneficiaries have benefited from the toilet repair scheme of GSUDA.
Speaking to The Goan, Dessai said recently, GSUDA consultant, Sumit Singh gave information on open defecation and related steps taken to eradicate it completely from Quepem.
When asked what steps Quepem Municipal Council (QMC) has taken to curb open defecation, Dessai said that GSUDA consultant, Sumit Singh informed that the council has given Rs 5,333 to about 232 beneficiaries to repair household toilets. QMC also conducted a survey to locate sites where open defecation takes place and around 16 spots were identified.
Dessai further informed that in Devsa-Quepem, four toilets of the closed government primary school were repaired and these would be handed over for public use. He said further that in Kopelawada-Quepem, QMC asked GSUDA to install bio-toilets as household do not have toilets here.
