Tension gripped Quepem on Wednesday as villagers marched to the police station and filed a complaint against Gautam Khattar over alleged derogatory remarks about St Francis Xavier at a Vasco event.

Protesters gathered at Holy Cross Church, condemned the remarks, and proceeded to the station raising slogans and demanding action.

They said the comments hurt religious sentiments across Goa and insulted a widely revered saint.

Villagers urged police to arrest Khattar and sought a public apology at the Old Goa shrine, warning that anything less would be unacceptable.

They stressed the outrage cut across communities and could disturb communal harmony.

Police confirmed receiving the complaint and said an inquiry is underway.
