Fissures among the Opposition parties emerged on the first day of the 2-day Assembly session with statements of leaders of Goa Forward Party and Revolutionary Goans Party raising significance over putting up a united front against the government.
GFP chief Vijai Sardesai point blank told the media that he does not think the Opposition is united. "Who knows whether Congress will oppose the government or not… it is too early to say", Sardesai said.
"We have to see whether the Opposition is united. I don't think the Opposition is united", he said, but ruled out speculations that he would support the government.
Revolutionary Goans MLA Viresh Borkar who supported the motion against the Speaker, however, said he supported the motion to oppose BJP but will raise independent issues in the Assembly and not align with any party.
“We will function as an independent Opposition with different ideology and principles”, Borkar said, adding issue-based support will be given to the Congress.
The Aam Aadmi Party that has two MLAs, however said it wants to work unitedly with other Opposition parties keeping the interest of Goa in mind.
"We will stay together as Opposition for Goa and Goa will be at the centre of whatever we do. Opposition has a major role. This time Goa has good Opposition. Will fulfil that in a very desired and organised manner", said Captain Venzy Viegas, who was elected AAP Legislative Party leader.
Presently, the Congress is in a dilemma over the Leader of Opposition as there is no unanimity on who will be their leader in the House.
