The escape of the undertrial has brought back into focus the security apparatus in the highly-secured Central jail in Colvale.
According to police officials investigating the undertrial escape case, the whole incident was well planned and coordinated to precision.
A senior police officer informed that such precision planning can be carried out only when a person meets up or on the phone.
“It appears that mobile phones are accessible to the accused in the jail which helps them to talk at length. Only jammers can stop such activity in the prison,” a police officer informed.
But the Additional Inspector General of Prison, Ashutosh Apte begged to differ.
“There is not even a remote possibility of mobile phones reaching the hands of prisoners in jail. The jail authorities and the IRB frisk prisoners very thoroughly, leaving no scope of cellphones reaching jail inmates. In fact, at a certain point in the jail premises, even jail authorities are not allowed to take their cellphones,” Apte said.
He said the undertrial Vivek Kumar Gautam was taken out of the jail premises a couple of times in the last two months and must have met people during that time.
“Gautam was taken to Agra twice last month in the investigation of a case over there. He was also taken to the district hospital a couple of times last month,” the additional IGP disclosed.
Apte admitted that no jammers were installed in the jail, but ruled out the possibility of mobile phones reaching the hands of jail inmates.
