The Qurbani (sacrifice of livestock) of 107 cattle was conducted at the Goa Meat Complex (GMC) on Saturday to mark Eid festivities, amid police security at the site to prevent any untoward incident.
Speaking to the Goan, GMC Chairman Satyavijay Naik said 107 cattle were slaughtered at the GMC without any untoward incident.
Anticipating tension between rival groups, the South Goa district magistrate had imposed Section 144 around Goa Meat Complex at Usgao for the Eid al-Adha festival from midnight of August 31 till the midnight of September 5.
"I was present in the Goa Meat Complex. There was no tension, everything was peaceful and 107 cattle were slaughtered on Saturday," said Naik.
"Except for two incidents at Colva and Vasco, there were no reports of Qurbani in other parts of the State. We are monitoring the situation and we have also discussed the issue with senior police officers," Parab added.
While the Govansh Raksha Abhiyan (GRA) President Hanumant Parab has accused the government of appeasing the minorities by imposing Section 144 around the abattoir, the Goa Muslim Forum had appealed to its community to perform ‘Qurbani' only at GMC and not at any other place.
The GRA had staged a protest near the GMC in 2013 to condemn cattle slaughter and had appealed to the Muslim community to sacrifice goats instead. This day-long protest by the GRA had caused tension in the area and since then, the District Magistrate has been imposing Section 144 in the vicinity during the Eid festival.
