The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Goa Unit has come down heavily on the Congress for speaking against the judiciary after Surat District Court sentenced Rahul Gandhi to two years of jail in a criminal defemation case followed by his disqualification as the Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha).
Addressing a press conference in the party head office on Friday, BJP spokesperson Yatish Naik said that Gandhi has been ‘lawfully’ disqualified.
“Congress’ former MP Rahul Gandhi has been lawfully disqualified. Law is equal for all and it takes its own course. Nobody is above the law but Congress is talking the language of protest to a court order,” he said, condemning how the Opposition party has reacted to the development into the national case.
Naik asked Congress to “learn to respect the judiciary, democratic institution and democracy” arguing that the oldest political party cannot place Gandhi above the law.
Rahul Gandhi was on Friday disqualified as the LS MP soon after the Surat court sentenced him to two years of imprisonment in a case of defamation. The former MP faced trial over the ‘Modi surname’ remark.
The BJP has claimed that the Congress leader’s membership stands nullified from the time of conviction on March 23. A notification was issued on Friday confirming he was disqualified as the MP of Wayanad Parliamentary constituency of Kerala.
