The residents led by panch member Xavier Fernandes, besides members Isidore Rodrigues and Bella, argued that the removal of the earth from the hillock would spell doom for the underground water table in the village. Moreover, they pointed out that loose earth will come down on the main road during the monsoon causing accidents and demanded intervention of the Town and Country Planning department and other authorities to verify whether the work is being undertaken as per the rules.Property owner Valmiki Faleiro, however, said only around 11,000 square metres, which forms the lower portion of his total property admeasuring 76,000 sq meters, has been given to the contractor to level the ground by maintaining the natural contours. “The contractor has ensured that no mud falls on the road during transportation. I will further ensure that loose soil will not be left behind at the site after completion of the work,” Faleiro told the media.
