PANAJI: Railway attendant Shivam Chhanbas Mathpati was arrested after the Maharashtra State Excise Department seized 61 bottles of Goa-manufactured foreign liquor worth approximately Rs 71,560 from the Mangaluru Express at Thane railway station on Wednesday.
Acting on information about the alleged transportation of Goa-made liquor into Maharashtra, officials intercepted the Mangaluru Express (12134) at around 12.15 pm on Platform No. 8.
According to the department, officials noticed Mathpati getting off the train while carrying two bags. When questioned, he allegedly identified himself as a railway attendant. The officials searched the bags and allegedly found 61 sealed bottles of Goa-manufactured foreign liquor of different brands and capacities. The total quantity seized was 36.85 bulk litres.
The seized consignment included Royal Challenge Whisky, Old Monk Coffee Rum, Royal Green Whisky, Oakmith Sanctory Whisky, Bacardi Gava Whisky, Black and White Whisky, Royal Stag Whisky, Kent 69 Whisky and Oakmith Gold Whisky. Officials also seized two flasks containing black-and-blue-coloured country liquor.
A case was registered under Crime Registration No. 257/2026 on September 23 under relevant sections of the Bombay Prohibition Act. Mathpati was produced before a court, which remanded him to one day of excise custody. The seized liquor was confiscated, according to the department. Further investigations are underway.
