The Awaken Goans have on Wednesday demanded to know how the government is pushing the smart meters when the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme has already lapsed.
The NGO leader Amar Gaonkar said that, as per the scheme, the States are not entitled to any financial assistance for any incomplete work executed under the RDSS infrastructure after the cut-off date. “Despite this, the government is pushing smart meters,” he added.
Gaonkar held a joint briefing with Kamlakar Shenoy from Mumbai regarding the ongoing fight against the forceful implementation of smart meters in Goa.
During the briefing, the duo highlighted, with documentary evidence and with reference to the Electricity Act, 2003, and other relevant provisions, which are being completely overlooked by the government to forcefully impose smart meters on Goan consumers. “This act amounts to a criminal breach of trust and rights of the consumers,” Gaonkar said.
“We would like to bring to the notice of the public that as on 31.03.2026, the RDSS (Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme) had lapsed. As per the scheme, the States are not entitled to any financial assistance for any incomplete work executed under the RDSS infrastructure after the cut-off date. Despite this, the government is pushing smart meters," he added.
