Rain picks up, yellow alert issued for Goa till June 30

Goa is experiencing heavy to very heavy rain, with a few places getting extremely heavy showers, as the southwest monsoon remains active over the State.

The total rainfall so far this season is 662.9 mm, close to the normal average of 702.1 mm for this time of year. The shortfall has now reduced to just 5.6 mm due to the increased rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa has issued a yellow alert for the State till June 30. Heavy rain is likely in parts of North Goa and very heavy rain in some areas of South Goa. Winds may reach speeds of 30-40 kmph, with gusts up to 50 kmph, across both districts.

In the 24 hours till Tuesday morning, moderate rainfall was recorded in many parts of Goa. Valpoi got 48.8 mm, Sanguem 47.5 mm, Quepem 47 mm, Ponda 45 mm, Sanquelim 36.8 mm, Dabolim 34.6 mm, Canacona 32.4 mm, Ela (Old Goa) 28.2 mm, Panaji 24.9 mm, Margao 24 mm, Mormugao 19.8 mm and Pernem 18.4 mm. Dharbandora had heavy rainfall of 76.1 mm, while Mapusa received light rain of 7 mm.

Several trees fell, damaging houses and public property. On Tuesday morning, a large hoarding collapsed along the Mapusa“Calangute road, leading to a traffic diversion.
