Residents of Aquem Baixo on Monday resorted to a novel way of protest over the bad condition of the main road at Shantinagar. They released paper boats in huge craters which were filled with rainwater.
Led by former Sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat, the residents also put forth a demand that the district Collector, South should immediately intervene and ensure inter-state heavy duty vehicles are stopped from plying on the road.
Demanding that PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar and Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro initiate action to repair the road and make the same motorable, Bhagat and the residents demanded that patch work has failed to bring the desired result, with the road posing risk to the safety of the motorist, particularly the two-wheeler riders. “There’s an urgent need to ban plying of heavy duty trucks along the road. This is a congested area, and the plying of the heavy duty vehicles poses danger to the residents and children”, he said.
The residents also demanded speed breakers, repairs to the damaged road and traffic signals to avoid accidents on the road.
