After a rainy couple of days which saw several villages flooding, and the River Mandovi breaching its banks in several parts, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa branch on Tuesday forecast milder weather in the coming few days.
Director of IMD Goa Dr Krrishnamurthy V Padgalwar told “The Goan” on Tuesday that the rains would subside for the next couple of days. “They may get heavy again after some days, but for now, they will subside. The Met Department will keep the public intimated in the next two days if heavy rain is forecast,” Padgalwar said. He added that though the government had been afraid that the state needed to be put on “red alert”, there was no need for this at the moment.
A statement issued by the Met Department recounted that the South West monsoon had been “vigorous” over Goa, with heavy to very heavy rainfall occurring at most places over Goa.
These are the places that received “very heavy rainfall”: Valpoi received the highest rainfall with 24 centimeters, Sanquelim came in next with 21 centimeters, Pernem and Ela (Old Goa) received 17 centimeters each, Panaji and Sanguem received 15 centimeters each, Ponda received 14 centimeters, and Quepem received 12 centimeters of rainfall. Dabolim (10 centimeters), Canacona and Murmugao (9 centimeters) received heavy rainfall.
The Department has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in the state till the morning of August 11. A fisherman warning had been issued for August 6 due to rough seas and high waves.
Strong winds upto 45 and 55 kilometers per hour, and gusting up to 65 kilometers an hour are likely to prevail along and off the coast of Maharashtra and Goa till August 10.
