Rape accused Nigerian was arrested in Porvorim riot case

The Nigerian, accused of kidnapping and raping a 39-year-old woman in Assagao last Saturday, was earlier arrested at least on two occasions for different offences in the State.
On Tuesday, Mapusa Police managed to get three days police custody of the accused, Kenneth Upegava (41).
Mapusa Police informed that the accused was earlier arrested in the Porvorim rioting case in November 2013, where a group of Nigerians formed an unlawful assembly and blocked traffic for over two hours on the NH17, opposite O’Coqueiro.
Mapusa Police had then arrested around 50 Nigerians for blocking the highway and creating traffic jam. They had also smashed a police vehicle in the ruckus. The Nigerians were protesting over the murder of their colleague. The case is yet to be chargesheeted.
In 2012, Calangute Police had also arrested him for overstaying and living illegally in India under the various sections of the Foreigners Act, 1946.
It may be recalled that the accused had stopped the victim woman while she was proceeding on her two-wheeler at Parra on May 28.
The accused allegedly threatened her at knife point and led her to his room at Assagao, where he allegedly raped her. The woman escaped from the clutches of the accused and later filed a complaint at the Mapusa police station.
The accused was finally tracked in Mumbai and Goa Police with the help of Mumbai Railway Police nabbed him at Panvel railway station when he was trying to flee.
Mapusa Police produced him before a JMFC court on Tuesday evening which granted him three days police custody. Mapusa Police is investigating the case.
