Serpentine queues of ration card holders have been literally the order of the day in the South Goa District Collectorate for over a month now ever since the Civil Supplies department had started the process of distributing the new cards.
Monday saw agitated ration card holders demanding that the Salcete Mamlatdar and the civil supplies officer step in to mitigate the hardships and trauma faced by them for the last several days. Activist Kennedy Afonso told the media that he had been coming to the Collectorate since the last three days to collect his ration card for want of an effective mechanism in place. “The last two days I have been returning home for the reason that the civil supplies office does not entertain the people in the evening session. But the office can certainly introduce a token system wherein those standing in a queue today can have preference the next day,” Afonso said.
He further demanded that the government should immediately send all the ration cards to the respective village panchayats and stop inconveniencing the public.
Former MMC Councilor Ramdas Hazare said the government should step in and stop the hardships faced by the beleaguered ration card holders. .
