Margao Municipal Council’s plan to launch a concerted campaign to collect segregated waste from the households and establishments has failed to kick off once again.
Blame it on the delay in receiving the logistics support from the office of the Director of Municipal Administration or otherwise, the plan to launch a propaganda campaign, backed by distribution of polythene bags to each of the 25,000-odd households has been kept on hold for the second week running.
The Margao Municipal Council will now display banners at the garbage black spots on the periphery of the city along the ring road at Aquem, Rawanfond, Arlem Circle, near Ravindra Bhavan and the wholesale fish market. Presently, all these places are considered as black spots given the amount of unsegregated waste finding its way into the city from the neighbouring villages.
The MMC had planned to launch a drive to collect segregated waste from the city households and business establishments, beginning from February 1. The action was postponed by a week on the plea that the logistics support promised by the office of the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) has failed to arrive in the city.
What’s interesting to note is that the logistics support in terms of polythene bags and bins, which was expected from the DMA’s office has still not come yet, leaving the Municipal officials to postpone the planned exercise.
“Our workers are going around the city collecting waste door to door. However, the ongoing exercise needs fine tuning and this can be achieved only by providing the households the
necessary polythene bags to store the dry waste and the bins for wet waste,” remarked an official.
Given that the planned arrival of the logistics from the DMA’s office may take some time, MMC officials have now decided to target the black spots on the border areas of the city by displaying banners, with a plea not to dump waste at the spots.
“We will display banners along the Aquem ring road, Rawanfond area, wholesale fish market road, Ravindra Bhavan road and Arlem Circle. These are the major black spots identified by the civic body and we will make a beginning from these areas from Wednesday,” the official added.
