Freedom fighter Chandrahas Pundalik Naik, alias Naik Asolnekar, who contributed to Goa’s Liberation, was born on September 11, 1917, in Assolna, Salcete, to Pundalik Asolnekar. His legacy is preserved at the Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa – The Land, The Struggle, The People, in Sinquerim. Educated up to the primary level in Marathi and the second year of Lyceum, he joined nationalist activities in 1942 and became a member of the Azad Gomantak Dal. He distributed pamphlets and nationalist literature, circulated messages and assisted underground workers. Arrested in 1951 and again in 1954, he was detained on both occasions. He resumed underground activities after returning to Goa in 1959 and was arrested and severely tortured in July 1961, but refused to disclose information about his associates. He received the Tamrapatra in 1973.
