Repaired a year ago, rains wash away roads in Margao

Motorists fear roads will turn unmotorable if authorities do not take up repairs soon

Repaired a year ago, rains wash away roads in Margao

MARGAO
Strange this may seem, but true that the PWD, National Highway will have to take up the repair of a road stretch in the heart of the commercial capital which was repaired a year ago.

That’s not all. The PWD, National Highway seemed also bracing up to get the contractor repair the Margao flyover, which was hot-mixed by the PWD last year after removing the concrete surface.

Motorists as well as citizens using the road stretch to enter the city near Clube Harmonia, exactly near the petrol pump, have realised that the hot-mixed road, which was repaired over a year ago, showed signs of being washed away.

In fact, blame it on the heavy rainfall or otherwise, the road stretch has been washed away, with motorists raising fears that the stretch may turn accident prone if the PWD, NH does not move in quickly to repair the damaged road. “The road is being washed away by the rains by every passing day. If not repaired immediately, the entire stretch may be washed away turning the road unmotorable,” remarked a two-wheeler rider.

The road was repaired last year after a stretch of the road gave way during the monsoons. Officials conceded that the road was hot-mixed around two years ago, but played host to potholes before the PWD got the contractor to repair the stretch as mandated by the maintenance period clause.

A senior engineer, PWD National Highway told The Goan that the PWD will get the contractor repair the road with cold tar before the stretch turns unmotorable.

Similarly, he said the Margao flyover, which was hot-mixed a year ago after removing the concrete surface, will be repaired when the rains subside. “Since the road was hot-mixed over a year ago, the contactor is liable to repair the road as per the maintenance clause,” the PWD engineer said, adding that the contractors will be told to get the two roads repaired when the rains subside.
