Quepem Police on Friday cracked the fourth burglary case and recovered the stolen gold ornaments that were sold to a goldsmith at Kharsundi in Sangli district.
Piedade Carvalho had filed a police complaint stating that her house was burgled in July and similar modus operandi was used in the recent burglary of three houses at Tilamol-Quepem. She had suspected that Bryson Faria, who was arrested in recent burglary cases, broke open her house. She had reported that her gold chain, bangle, earrings and rings worth about Rs 73,000 and cash of Rs 4,000 were stolen from her house.
As Faria was on police remand for his involvement in the recent three burglaries, PSI Harish Dessai extracted the truth from the accused that he had committed the burglary and handed over the stolen gold to his accomplice Sunil Mahato of Kharsundi in Sangli taluka, but presently residing at Sirvoi-Quepem. It was further revealed that Mahato had taken the gold to a goldsmith at his native place at Kharsundi and sold it to him.
Based on this information, Quepem Police arrested
Mahato and received 1 day remand.
"A police team led by PI Manoj Mardolkar, PSI Harish Dessai, head constable Laxmikant Borkar, police constable Rupesh Shetkar and Chandrakant Naik left for Kharsundi along with
both the accused on
Thursday morning," said PI Manoj Mardolkar.
"When the police questioned the goldsmith, he tried to show his smartness, but after Mahato was presented before him, he spilled the beans and disclosed that he had purchased the gold ornaments from Sunil. The stolen gold ornaments were recovered from the goldsmith," added PI Mardolkar.
Later in the day, Mahato was released on bail, while Faria was sent to 14 days police remand.
Piedade Carvalho said she is happy that the police has cracked the case.
