One electoral officer’s goof-up in not adhering to the rule book and oversight at polling station No 8 has led to widespread consequences for business and people in Aquem-Margao and neighbouring constituencies.
As a result of the re-polling, closure of liquor shops, bars and restaurants have been asked to remain closed from 5 pm on February 6 to 9 pm on February 7. This order, apart from Margao, is applicable to neighboring constituencies of Fatorda, Curtorim, Benaulim, Nuvem and Navelim.
All licensed premises selling liquor have been directed to remain closed on February 7 in Margao. However, the licensed premises may be allowed to keep the restaurant open for serving food only. Also, the owners have been directed to display a board in the premises stating “no liquor will be served
and the restaurant is open for serving food only.”
Also, there is a strict directive against transporting liquor from one place to another within Margao constituency as per sections sections 5 and 8 of the Goa Excise Duty Act, 1964 (Act 5 of 1964).
Any establishment is found violating the the directives issues will see cancellation of its license and the
owner shall liable for penal action under Section 188
of IPC.
As a result of re-polling the government has declared a ‘paid holiday’ for all government and private employees/offices situated within the limits of polling station No 8.
