Residents use canoe to reach homes as Malar-Divar flooded

Majority of the areas of Malar-Divar were flooded as the water from the river overflowed and entered inland due to release of water from Anjunem dam on Friday.

However the worst areas affected were Uski, Muddi and Vanjua. Water entered the houses of some people and many people in areas like Muddi had to use canoes to reach to their homes.

Speaking to The Goan, Chillaya Sawant of Muddi informed that since morning till night he has made seven trips in a canoe to help people reach their homes in Muddi.

“I along with others am helping people to reach their homes in canoes,” Sawant informed while stating that the water level reached right upto the football ground near the Malar panchayat.

When contacted, Sarpanch Mohan Volvoikar too concurred and said that many wards have been flooded.

Volvoikar informed that the Old Goa-Divar ferry too had to be suspended as the water level rose considerably.

Former sarpanch Tulsidas Kundaikar informed that the Ribandar-Divar ferry route was functional with vehicles queuing up to cross to and fro.

The locals further informed that the crop of the farmers who had cultivated their land was damaged due to the floods.
