A rickshaw driver died after his vehicle crashed into a parked tempo on the Verna bypass road in the early hours of Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 4.45 am on August 18, when the rickshaw, driven by Laxman Tandel of Vengurla, Maharashtra, was travelling from Margao towards Panaji.
According to Verna Police, the Eicher tempo, driven by Mallappa Chalwadi, a Verna resident originally from Bijapur, Karnataka, was partially parked on the highway in a dangerous manner.
Police said the tempo driver had allegedly failed to take necessary safety precautions, including placing a reflective warning triangle or switching on hazard lights or indicator signals at a safe distance to alert approaching motorists.
Due to darkness and poor visibility, the rickshaw collided with the tempo from behind.
Tandel sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Verna Police registered an offence against the tempo driver under Sections 281, 285 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 122 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The case was registered following a complaint by Head Constable Sudeshkumar Desai of Verna Police Station.
Further investigation is being conducted by PSI David Costa under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
