Roadside garages hinder traffic in Mapusa

Roadside mechanics and garages cause hindrance to smooth movement of traffic. Such roadside garages are also an eyesore on the streets of Mapusa.

MAPUSA

Many such roadside mechanics have been found operating close to spare part shops in the town. In many cases, spare part dealers encourage mechanics to set up repair joints close to their shops to boost their sales.
The million dollar question is whether Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) will live up to the challenge and act against such mechanics and garages.
Mapusa traffic cell has identified at least 12 such roadside mechanics/garages in and around Mapusa, where mechanics have been carrying out thriving business.
Two mechanics at two places from Laxminarayan Temple to Menezes Pharmacy at Faira-Baixo, Mapusa have been repairing two-wheelers in close proximity and in tacit understanding with the owners of spare part shops along the road.
Three mechanics at three different places from Ruturai Plaza to Atmaram Phadke shop on old Mapusa Clinic road also indulge in similar activity.
Almost four garages operate on the roadside causing obstruction to motorists in Dattawadi/Ansabhat area.
Bappa garage in front of St Jerome’s Chapel near Mapusa Police Station, Balu garage on Dattawadi road, Pramod garage at Ansabhat junction and Jaggu Shetty garage at Ansabhat junction have been in the motor-mechanic trade for many years, but the location of the garages causes obstruction to traffic and pedestrians.
In Khorlim, Kamleshwar garage and Sing garage along Khorlim-Assagao road has also been causing nuisance by the roadside.
The repair business carried out by a roadside mechanic at Gaunsawaddo and a mechanic near Goa State Co-operative Bank Ltd, Market branch and two garages at Ghotnicho Whal, Cunchelim and mechanics near Rashtroli Temple and near Bandekar petrol pump, Karaswada, have been causing hindrance to smooth movement of traffic.
Despite several reminders about the roadside mechanics in the past, Mapusa civic officials have failed to take action against the nuisance.
“We are aware of the problems created by the roadside mechanics. We will be issuing show-cause notices to all such roadside mechanics and garages within next few days,” said MMC Chief Officer, Clen Madeira.
