Voicing concern over poor maintenance and breaching of Bunds and the issue of auctioning of sluice gates, Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte has instructed the Bardez mamlatdar to prepare a detailed report on safety and related issues of Bunds in Bardez taluka.
He was addressing media persons after inspecting the Salai Khazan Bund, Charmans Bund and Sampal Cater Bund along with Bardez Mamlatdar Dashrath Gawas and other officials, while also inaugurating the Rs 18 lakh construction work of a 200-feet long retention wall along the Nallah in Salai.
"Due to improper maintenance, many Bunds have breached and water has entered the fields, causing heavy losses to farmers.
"Issues pertaining to safety of these three Bunds and auctioning of sluice gates have been discussed with the Bardez Mamlatdar and he has been instructed to prepare a detailed report on these bunds, as well as of other Bunds in Bardez taluka," said Khaunte.
"On receipt of a detailed report, it will be possible to know which tenants associations are functioning and which are defunct. Thereafter, a decision will be taken about election of defunct Khazan tenants associations, issues relating to their tenancy and hereditary rights, inclusion of tenants' sons in the association in respect of tenants who have expired."
"The government is interested in bringing reforms in these matters," said Khaunte.
Later, Khaunte laid the foundation stone for the construction of retention wall along the Nallah in Ward 7 of Salvador-do-Mundo village in the presence of Salvador-do-Mundo Parish Priest Fr J Fernandes, Salvador-do-Mundo Sarpanch Sandeep Salgoankar and panch members.
"Since there was no support to the Nallah, there was a danger that houses along the border of this Nallah could have collapsed due to soil erosion. Further, the mud flows into the Nallah during rains, due to which the Nallah get choked. Hence, the 200-feet retention wall is being constructed along this Nallah at a cost of Rs 18 lakh," said Khaunte.
