Citizens of Chinchinim have made a fervent plea to the postal authorities in the state to streamline the functioning of the post office in the village as they claimed that the office has been hit by manpower shortage and inefficient staff.
Serpentine queues of citizens at the Chinchinim post office are the order of the day, even as villagers claimed that the postal department has left the functioning of the post office to the skeletal staff for reasons best known to the authorities.
When The Goan team visited the post office at Chinchinim on Thursday, they were welcomed by a huge queue of citizens since morning, with agitated residents demanding the intervention of the postal authorities to mitigate their hardships.
An elderly woman informed that she had first visited the post office on December 26, but returned home disappointed after finding a long queue. "I have come again today with the hope of opening an account and also withdraw my matured deposit, but again there's a big line. The government and the authorities just cannot make the people stand in queues while not taking steps to tone up the manpower requirements of the post office," she chided.
Local social activist Cyril Leitao said the people of Chinchinim are losing their patience as the postal authorities have neglected the post office for a long time. He told The Goan that the situation has been turning from bad to worse, with manpower shortage being the order of the day, but the postal authorities have not showed any urgency to stop the rot.
"We only request the postal authorities to depute additional manpower and also ensure that the inefficient staff is transferred from the post office," Cyril said, while issuing a warning that the people will be forced to resort to agitation if the situation does not improve immediately.
Last month, the Chinchinim Citizens Committee had petitioned the postal authorities as well as to the powers that be to improve the functioning of the post office, but in vain.
