In the continuing fallout of the devastating fire at Birch by Romeo Lane in Arpora that killed 25 people, the local administration on Monday sealed the Romeo Lane club and restaurant in Vagator and another establishment in the same name, promoted by the same owners who are currently absconding.

Authorities confirmed that brothers Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the promoters of both the Arpora and Vagator units, remain untraceable.

The Romeo Lane outlet in Vagator – built overlooking the sea and one of the more high-profile nightlife venues in the area – has frequently featured in the news over the last few years for alleged illegal constructions, environmental violations and non-compliance with High Court directions.

Local residents and activists had repeatedly petitioned authorities, alleging that the club continued operating despite inspections and notices issued at various stages.

Following the Arpora tragedy, the administration moved swiftly to seal the Vagator premises as a precautionary measure and to “verify all structural, safety and licensing compliances,” a senior official said.

A separate Romeo Lane guest house operating in Assagao has also been sealed.

The sealing of the two outlets come amid heightened scrutiny of coastal commercial establishments following the Birch tragedy.

The Arpora fire has reignited concerns over the enforcement of fire safety norms, occupancy permissions and environmental regulations across North Goa’s coastal belt, where multiple clubs and restaurants have been accused of operating without proper licences.
