PONDA
A man had a lucky escape when a room in his house at Dukale-Mollem was reduced to ashes in a fire on Saturday morning.
The Ponda fire services received a call at around 9.45 am and a fire brigade rushed to the site.
“The villagers had extinguished the fire before we could reach the spot,” a firefighter told The Goan.
According to locals, Naru Gaonkar was asleep in the house at the time and woke up as smoke filled the other room.
He rushed outside the house and raised an alarm. Neighbours gathered outside the house and extinguished the fire with the help of water from adjacent houses.
The gold ornaments of Gaonkar's daughter-in-law reportedly melted in the fire, while utensils and some furniture were also destroyed.
The fire officials are yet to ascertain the exact loss to property and cause of fire.
