Amid an uproar over the unhygienic municipal fish market at Chaudi-Canacona, the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new fish market at Chaudi–Canacona.
Tribal Welfare Minister Ramesh Tawadkar laid the foundation stone for the Rs 3.87 crore project in the municipal hall in the presence of officials.
In his address, Tawadkar launched a scathing attack on the opposition for creating an unwanted scene at the fish market and the municipality. He questioned whether the opposition had done anything before to upgrade the old fish market and whether a fish market can be built in 7 days.
“Just seven days before the laying of the foundation stone for the new fish market, a group of racketeers went to the CMC administrator and demanded a new market within 7 days. Can anyone tell me if any government can begin the work to construct a fish market in 7 days?”
Speaking further Tawadkar said the GSUDA designed fish market, to be completed within a year, will accommodate 60+ local fish vendors with modern stalls, with dedicated hygienic zones for fish, poultry and meat.
A separate temporary modern shed facility for fish vendors will be erected during the construction period.
