Stating that development of villages should only take place with the consent of locals, Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar has said the State government should not sanction any project without taking villagers into confidence.

“Projects like IIT are required in Goa but not at the cost of hurting the sentiments of people. In a democracy, views of the people are supreme,” said Salgoankar, while reacting to the State government’s decision to scrap the IIT project at Melavali.

He was addressing a gathering at Guirim after launching the work to hotmix a 2-km road between Piedade Chapel and Santerim temple in Guirim at a cost of Rs 1.56 crore. Guirim Sarpanch Reema Gadekar, Dy Sarpanch Baba Gadekar and panch members were present on the occasion.

“Most roads in Guirim have now been hotmixed and these works have been done after taking locals, Guirim communidade and the farmers into confidence. So far, development works worth Rs 80 crore have been completed in Saligao constituency,” said Salgaonkar.

The Saligao MLA said the roads between Saligao and Pillerne Industrial Estate as well as the Chogm road between Porvorim and Saligao would also be hotmixed soon.

“The National Highways Authoritiy of India (NHAI) has acquired 50,000 sq mtrs of land by the roadside at Guirim. The RDA has proposed a satellite market is the area. Once this acquisition process is completed, work on the satellite market may begin.”

“Small businesses, especially kiosk owners from Guirim, will be allotted space in the satellite market,” said Salgaonkar.

Guirim Sarpanch Rima Gadekar and Dy Sarpanch Baba Gadekar also spoke at the event.
