All Goa Ex-Servicemen Welfare Association organised a five-kilometre marathon 'Run for Jawaan' on Sunday at Panaji as a mark of respect for the armed forces and the martyrs.
Around 600 people participated in the run which was flagged off at 7 am from Santa Monica Jetty and ended at Miramar Circle. The marathon was flagged off by Admiral (retd) Suresh Mehta, the former chief of Indian Navy.
Admiral Mehta stressed on the importance of an interaction between civilians and the army through such events. “It is important that there is a interaction between the army and the civilians. With the help of such events, the two sections of the society will be able to understand each other. Also, such enthusiastic crowds motivate the army and boost their morale,” he stated.
The marathon was open to all. Following the run, there was a cultural programme organised for defence heroes of Goa.
