Under trial at Sada jail attempts suicide

A 22-year-old under trial lodged at Sada sub-jail in connection with several theft cases besides a rioting case, allegedly attempted suicide by consuming phenol on Friday evening.
Sources at Sada sub-jail informed The Goan that Irshad Singur was immediately rushed to the Cottage Hospital in Chicalim, from where he was referred to Goa Medical College in Bambolim where he is presently under observation.
According to sources in Sada sub-jail, the incident was reported at about 5 pm on Friday when Singur approached jail authorities and informed them that he had, in frustration, consumed phenol that was given to inmates to clean toilets.
“Jail authorities swung into action and rushed him to Cottage hospital at Chicalim in a 108 ambulance. After giving him medical aid, he was referred to GMC hospital at Bambolim where his condition is reported to be stable and he is under observation,” said a source.
“Since the last few days, Singur was behaving unusual and on Friday morning, jail authorities had sent him to Institute of Psychiatry & Human Behaviour (IPHB) in Bambolim for a mental checkup.”
“After examining Singur, doctors at IPHB opined that the patient should be lodged at IPHB as he showed symptoms of mental illness and had suicidal tendencies.”
“In order to lodge at IPHB, a court order was required. But before jail authorities could obtain a court order and move him to IPHB, Singur contacted jail authorities with claims that he had consumed phenol,” the source added.
When contacted, Mormugao police stated that they have not registered any case as yet as the patient is suffering from medical illness and was not fit to give any statement.
Police added that they are awaiting for a doctor's report to decide on their further course of action.
