Fearing a fire mishap and health hazard similar to the one at Sonsodo, locals on Saturday demanded the urgent removal of garbage dumps from the garbage treatment plant at Sada.

Residents have said the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) and other departments concerned have failed to clear the garbage heaps which have been growing by the day. They have complained that the dumps not only emanate foul stench in the area, but also pose a huge danger to the densely populated area around the garbage treatment plant.

“Despite several requests, the MMC and other authorities have failed to clear the garbage. I will not allow any garbage to be dumped at the garbage treatment plant if action is not initiated soon,” warned MMC ward councillor Sandesh Mesta.

“ I have even taken up this issue with Mormugao MLA Milind Naik. He had assured me that a plot would be identified near Verna and that the garbage would be shifted, but that has also not materialised.”

“There have been incidents of fire at the plant recently. Residents have requested me to clear the garbage, failing which they will come on roads and I will have to join them. I will also get together with locals and block garbage from other areas to be dumped at the site,” said Mesta.

Social activist Jayesh Shetgaonkar said nothing had been done about the garbage since the last 20 years

“There is neither segregation nor are the dumps being cleared. How will the garage be cleared when there is no segregation? The wet waste technology taken up by BITS Palani is not yet functional and the authorities are not bothered. Who will be responsible if the dump here catches fire,” asked Shetgaonkar.

Prepared to handle any untoward
incident, says Mormugao CO
VASCO: Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes on Saturday asserted the municipal council was fully geared to handle any untoward incident at the garbage treatment plant in Sada.
Fernandes said he had also written to fire services to inspect the site and offer suggestions to avoid a fire mishap in the location.
“We are putting two additional baling machines at the garbage site. One machine was given to us by the DMA through GSUDA and the other baling machine was in the market area, which will be temporarily shifted to the garbage site.”
“We have also put additional staff at the site to work in three shifts. We now have three baling machines at the garbage treatment plant in Sada. We have already made an appeal to people to give us segregated garbage and notices have been issued to 25 organisations as bulk generators who are creating garbage of over 100 kgs per day,” said Fernandes.
“I have written to the Vasco fire station to inspect the area and give us some suggestion how to avoid such fire incidents. Similarly, I have written to the MMC staff to take necessary action and we are doing our best to avoid a situation like Sonsodo.”
“We are working on a war footing to clear as much garbage as we can. We are fully prepared to handle any incident at
the garbage treatment plant in Sada, in case it occurs,” Fernandes added.
