Former Ambelim sarpanch Cruz Silva has warned that the traditional fishermen along the banks of Assolna, Ambelim, Velim, Cavelossim, Chinchinim and Betul will not sit quiet if any attempt is made to dredge River Sal beyond the Orlim bridge downstream.
“The river Sal stretch from Orlim bridge right till the mouth of the river at Betul has been the home to marine resources including shell fish. The River Sal has been the livelihood of the traditional fishermen for decades. We will not allow any interference with our livelihoods,” he warned.
Cruz also took strong exception to the dredger making its presence in the river without keeping the fishermen in the loop and added that the equipment must have damaged the fishing gears of the traditional fishermen in the river.
