The incessant rains over the last few days have brought back the fear of floods in many areas of North Goa, including Bicholim, Sankhali and Sal.
Heavy rains have again led to rise in water level of Bicholim river at Bicholim and Valvanti river at Sankhali.
Bicholim Mamlatdar Pravinjay Pandit who is the in charge of disaster management cell informed that though there was rise in water level the situation is under control.
However, he said water had to be released after Anjunem dam level has increased. He informed the dam water level is 92.84 meters which is almost high.
Late Saturday evening, there was significant rise in water levels in catchment areas of Virdi. Authorities have started pumping water at Sakhali town to avoid likely floods.
Meanwhile, the Tillari irrigation authorities have alerted people residing near the banks of river Chapora at Sal as there are possibilities of releasing water from Tillari dam if rains continue.
At Sal village some trouble is anticipated as there are possibilities of releasing Tillari dam water at a much higher speed. Tillari irrigation authorities have alerted the people in this regard.
Also, the Ghoteli river has crossed the danger mark and water is overflowing from the bridge at Assonora.
In Sal village, at around 8 pm, water entered near the Bhumika temple. “Villagers fear water level may go up late at night,” said Meghashyam Raut, a local leader from the village.
Meanwhile, the water level of Chapora river at Sal has almost touched the bridge connecting Bicholim and Pernem talukas.
Many incidents of tree falling and roof collapsing incidents have resulted in losses of around Rs one lakh in the taluka.
WRD engineer K P Naik said the authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation at Sal.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant has already instructed Tillari dam authorities to people alert in case there are possibilities of high discharge of dam water which increases Chapora water level.
