With power consumers in receipt of inflated electricity bills, Aam Admi Party Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on Thursday gave a call to the citizens to hit the streets against the high electricity bills.

The Benaulim MLA along with Seraulim Sarpanch, Seema Shanke, panch members and leaders met the citizens of Seraulim & Socubhatt on the issue of inflated electricity bills.

“Many people have received bills which is multi fold of what they normally get. How will a middle class family pay this high bills?” he questioned.

Venzy said this government will not pay heed to people’s problem unless the people hit the streets.

On Wednesday, citizens from Salcete coastal belt raised serious concerns over unusually high electricity bills and heavy penalties imposed by the Electricity Department.

Citizens, who assembled at the office of Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas presented their bills and grievances, highlighting arbitrary tariff hikes and excessive fines imposed under the pretext of technical discrepancies. One citizen revealed that he was fined Rs 47,000 for what was described as a mere “load discrepancy” technical issue.

Later addressing the media, Venzy said the BJP government has already looted Goa’s natural resources, and now it wants to loot the middle class through inflated electricity bills. Instead of resolving genuine technical issues with citizens, the government is using technicalities to impose heavy penalties, he said.

He further stated that arbitrary tariff revisions and high penalties on minor discrepancies are burdening households at a time when the cost of living is already high.

Venzy assured the affected citizens that AAP will take up their cases with the concerned authorities and raise the issue strongly to protect the interests of Goans.
