Stating that works on the Aravalem drainage was of paramount importance, Cortalim Deputy Sarpanch Raymond D’Sa on Wednesday said Alina Saldanha should have got the works done in her capacity as an MLA.
“Such important works can only be done if there are constant follow-ups and not mere talks and assurances,” said D’Sa while speaking to reporters after the joint inspection carried out by Saldanha on Wednesday to assess the drainage works promised by Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL).
A visibly upset D’sa also said despite several inspections and assurances, works were not taken up and it could lead to flooding of the area during monsoon. “The MLA had convened an emergency inspection in March and it was decided then that the gutters would be built in 15 days time to see the flow of water and to study the levels. Another inspection was conducted later and today is the third inspection, yet nothing is being done.”
“We had warned the MLA that the works could cause raise the height of roads and vehicles of those houses by the roadsides would not be in a position to be moved in or out once the works begin. Today, the vehicles are all stuck and in times of emergency, they cannot be put to use,” said D’Sa.
The Cortalim deputy sarpanch said they had also identified a weak mango tree which could collapse at any time. “They had assured to cut the tree within 8 days, but that too has not been done as yet. I don’t know why this inspection is being held today and for whom, because there is no DBL official present here and the inspection is being conducted with a DBL supervisor, who, for sure, cannot decide in the matter.”
“Residents are upset as waters will enter their houses during the monsoons. The MLA should have got these works done in her official capacity and these works can only be taken up if follow-ups are taken. These works don’t happen with talks and fake assurances,” said D’Sa.
