Angry locals of Aravalem in Cortalim have decided to stage a road blockade agitation on June 3, after accusing Dilip Buildcon Limited (DBL) of failing to take up drainage works in the area despite assuring to complete the work before the monsoons.
A livid Cortalim MLA Alina Saldanha, who conducted a joint inspection in the presence of PWD officials, Cortalim Panchayat and DBL officials on Wednesday, said she was shocked and angry to note that despite assurances during the last inspection, no work had been taken
up by DBL.
Describing the DBL as an irresponsible company, Saldanha urged the government to take stringent measures against the company. She also decided to support the locals in their agitation and added that she would take up the matter with Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, who would be inspecting the area within the next two days.
“DBL is very irresponsible and I will request the government to take stringent measures against the company for causing hardship to the people to such an
extent.”
“Monsoons are round the corner, but where is the infrastructure to cope with the flow of water to prevent flooding of their houses? DBL claims they have made a gutter, but it is not a gutter but only digging work and with one shower, the mud dug will be back on the gutter and block the flow of water,” said
Saldanha.
“I don’t know how and why DBL seems so unconcerned about the safety and security of the locals. Each time we have an inspection, their representatives make promises but nothing is fulfilled.”
The Cortalim MLA said the people had reached a stage where they would take law into their own hands because nothing else seems to be working.
“We had a meeting with all departments and all ministers had said this work is to be taken on top
priority.”
“This issue pertains to people’s lives, houses and belongings. How long can they be made to suffer? They have decided to block roads and I will be with them because we have given umpteen opportunities to DBL but nothing seems to be happening and they have no respect for people,” added Saldanha.
