Saligao Sarpanch Lafira Gomes was on Tuesday voted out of office after a no-confidence motion was passed by 5-0 panchas in the nine-member panchayat. Anticipating her defeat in the no-confidence motion, Gomes submitted her resignation to the Director of Panchayats on Monday and a copy of her resignation was forwarded to the panchayat secretary in the evening.
Five panchas -- Pandurang alias Nandu Harmalkar, Dayanand Mandrekar, Shrudha Borkar, Kalpana Eknath Oroskar and Dipak Rane -- had submitted a no-confidence motion to the block development office at Mapusa on April 22.
Citing reasons for the no-confidence motion, they claimed that Gomes encouraged illegal constructions, did not take panch members into confidence while taking decisions on development issues and had misused her powers.
The BDO convened a special meeting in the panchayat office on Tuesday to discuss the no-confidence motion and had appointed Laximan Parsekar as the observer. Realizing that no-confidence motion moved against her would be passed in the meeting, Gomes submitted her resignation to the Director of Panchayats on Monday.
