The plant, having capacity to treat 125 tonnes of waste per day, will now treat 100 tonnes of additional waste.
The process of evaluation of environment effect has already been started and after receiving permission from the Union Environment Ministry, the intake capacity of garbage at the Saligao plant will be increased.
The Saligao garbage treatment plant was inaugurated on May 30, 2016, and treats 125 tonnes of garbage from North Goa on daily basis. After the project was successful, the government decided to increase its capacity to treat additional 100 tonnes of waste. There is land to treat this 100 tonnes of additional waste and hence no additional land will be purchased.
The plant also produces electricity and it is supplied to a power grid.
Moreover, the plant also creates bio-gas from the garbage and it is used as fuel for the bio-fuel green buses of
the KTC.
According to officials from the Saligao Garbage Treatment Plant, they have planned to treat the garbage by working in three shifts. "Everyday we treat 125 tonnes of garbage in one-and-half shift and we won't require more workers to treat additional 100 tonnes of garbage," said an official.
When contacted, Deputy speaker and Goa Waste Management Corporation Director Micheal Lobo confirmed the government's decision to increase capacity of the Saligao plant.
"We have initiated the process of evaluation of environment effect and after receiving permission from the Union Environment Ministry, the capacity of the plant will be increased by additional 100 tonnes," he added.
"Similar garbage treatment plant will be set up at Bainguinim and it will solve the garbage problem of entire Tiswadi taluka. There is a need to install such plants in Mapusa, Tivim, Mayem and Bicholim constituencies," stated Lobo.
