According to the Old Goa Police, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Chorao ferry ramp when the truck arrived to board the ferry. When questioned by the ferry staff whether the truck was full or empty, the driver replied that it was empty and hence it was directed to be boarded on the side of the ferry.
However, when the vehicle boarded the ferry, it tilted on one side giving an indication that the truck was full. Hence the staff directed the driver to reverse the vehicle and re-board the ferry so that the vehicle could be placed in the middle of the ferry in order to maintain the balance.
While the driver was reversing in his attempt to take the vehicle out, he misjudged and the truck went off the ferry and fell partly into the water. Luckily, the driver Udit Kauthankar from Mayem-Bicholim was able to get out of the vehicle.
Upon information of the incident, the Old Goa Police led by head constable Suraj Velip rushed to the spot accompanied by a police crane. However, the crane could not lift the truck out and hence a private crane was summoned which was successful in pulling the vehicle out of the water.
The Old Goa Police conducted a panchanama while also detaining the vehicle. The statements of the ferry staff were also recorded.
The truck driver claimed that the ferry left the ramp while his vehicle was midway on the ferry as a result of which it fell into the water.
