Drains in many wards have been chocked with solid and plastic waste, emanating a foul odour in the vicinity. SMC Chief Officer Pramod Dessai said it is difficult to get labourers to undertake the cleaning work due to low government wage rate.
Dessai informed that the pre-monsoon works in the town would start within 15 days. “SMC has about five labourers who undertake the works under Swacch Bharat Abhiyan.”
When asked why most of the drains are filled with waste, Dessai said, “It's difficult to find labourers to undertake the works like drainage cleaning, etc, because the government wage rate which they get is almost half the wages they get for private works.”
He further said in a recent meeting of municipal councils with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, the issue of low wage rate was raised. “After explaining the wage rate issue to the chief minister, he assured to increase the wage rate of manual labour from Rs 350 to Rs 500,” said Dessai
