Taking up cudgels for the people employed at the Sanjivani sugar factory, Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar on Tuesday set a deadline of December 5 to restart operations of the factory and threatened to hit the streets if his demand was not met.
Criticising the government of which is he a part, Gaonkar alleged that mismanagement is the key reason for the current situation at the factory. “12,000 people are dependent on the factory for their livelihood and around 2000 sugarcane farmers are directly attached to sugar factory”,
he said.
Attacking the government, Gaonkar said it had neglected the long-pending demand of replacing old machinery at the factory and handing over the administration to the cooperative society of farmers.
“Sugar produced at the factory is still lying... how will the factory make a profit”, he asked.
There is no chief chemist and even the chief engineer’s post is vacant. In this situation how will the factory perform, he questioned.
Gaonkar also came down heavily on the BJP-led coalition government alleging that he was not being taken into confidence in any manner despite being a part of it. “I don’t know who is running this government. I am not getting an appointment to meet CM. I just wanted to see his face,”
