In a bid to improve public hygiene and sanitation in the State, the government, under the Menstrual Hygiene Welfare Scheme, has floated a tender for the installation of sanitary pad dispensers at various buildings and construction sites. In addition, a tender has been floated for the installation of 30 portable toilets in the State.
The first tender, floated on November 26 invites bids for the supply, installation, commissioning and onsite maintenance of sanitary pad dispensers and sanitary pad incinerators at the sites. The second tender invites all the qualified bidders to submit their proposals for supply, installation, operation and maintenance of portable toilets in Goa.
The main objective of this Menstrual Hygiene Welfare Scheme is to provide the female construction
workers and their daughters studying from class VII with eco-friendly sanitary pads, and access to eco-friendly disposal methods.
The proposals put forth by the Goa Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board, allows for bid documents to be downloaded by December 7, and the same to be submitted by 5 pm on the same day. (Check out : https://tenderwizard.com/GOA).
The government’s decision to install pad dispensers comes in light of the important role sanitary pads play in the general health and hygiene of women. “The female workers at construction sites also face these unexpected situations. And these women use unhygienic methods (such as using cloth) for protection from menstrual cycle, as they cannot afford sanitary pads. Hence, sanitary pad dispensers at construction sites will bring relief to the female workers during menstrual emergencies,” says the note explaining why the project is being undertaken.
The main aim of setting up Portable toilets across Goa is to generate awareness about the importance of good hygiene and sanitation facilities, and to ensure labourers are not inconvenienced due to inaccessibility to proper toilets.
Earlier this year, the govt had given a huge boost to menstrual hygiene with the Labour Department installing sanitary pads dispensing machines at factories of IFB, Goa Glass Fibre, Cipla Pharmaceuticals and Nestle.
The state had attached great importance to personal and menstrual hygiene and had launched several awareness programmes. The Department had also launched Stri Sakthi Scheme with the objective of promoting menstrual hygiene in the State.
