Work on an approach road to a bridge at Bendwada in Sanguem came to a halt on Wednesday after villagers from Tarimol stopped construction, claiming the project would block access to their area.

According to residents, the contractor had started building a connecting road towards the Curchorem side of the newly constructed parallel bridge at Bendwada. However, Tarimol villagers objected, saying the alignment of the road would cut off access to their ward.

During the construction of the parallel bridge by GSIDC, no proper road link was provided for the Tarimol ward, which is home to over 500 people. Villagers said they had raised the issue with GSIDC officials at the time and were assured the approach road’s alignment would be modified to protect access to their area.

Despite these assurances, locals claimed the contractor began work on Wednesday without addressing their concerns. Fearing the construction would block their existing route, villagers rushed to the site and ordered the contractor to stop work until a clear road provision for Tarimol was ensured.

The residents have demanded that authorities clearly mark and guarantee access to Tarimol before any further construction.

They have also warned that the situation could escalate on Friday if the issue is not resolved promptly.
