The Sanquelim Municipal Council (SMC) has announced plans to install solar power systems on all its buildings, making it a significant step towards sustainability.
The decision was made during a recent council meeting chaired by SMC Chairperson Siddhi Prabhu and the initiative is expected to not only reduce the council's carbon footprint but also save on electricity bills.
The solar power project is part of the council's efforts to promote renewable energy and reduce its reliance on non-renewable sources.
“We are committed to making Sanquelim a clean and sustainable city. The solar power project is a significant step towards achieving this goal,” said Prabhu.
The council is also planning to impose a garbage tax on rented rooms and flats in the city to promote cleanliness and generate revenue.
Among other plans by the SMC includes a sewerage project to improve the city's sanitation system and prevent water-borne diseases, as well as upgrading the city's water supply system to ensure that citizens have access to clean drinking water.
“We appeal to citizens to participate in the city's development process and provide their feedback and suggestions on various initiatives,” added SMC Dy Chairperson Dayanand Boryeakar.
The council is also working to increase citizen participation in national day celebrations and other community events.
