OLD GOA
The Santa Cruz panchayat has begun the impounding of cattle within the panchayat jurisdiction from Wednesday.
Among the first cattle was a cow which was found roaming around the streets of Ubo Dando.
The cow was later impounded and sent to the cowshed of a local with whom the panchayat is in the process of signing an agreement.
Speaking to The Goan on the drive, Deputy Sarpanch Domnic Pereira said they had given enough warning to the villagers not to let their cattle astray and now the time has come to impound those which are found roaming around.
“From today, we will impound the cattle and keep it in the cowshed of a local Sebastiao. Another local Caitan has been appointed as an impounder and Lepold will be the helper,” Pereira stated while adding that all process will be followed under section 112 of the Goa Panchayat Raj Act.
“We will keep the impounded cattle for seven days in the cowshed, take good care of them and if nobody comes forward to stake claim then the cattle would be auctioned off,” Pereira said.
On the need for the initiative, panch Alison Braganza said it is an important step taken by the panchayat as there were complaints from the farmers that damage was done to their farm.
“So, on our part we are trying our best to help the farmers,” he stated.
Another panch Amabelle Gomes stated that the cattle also used to squat on the roads thereby proving a danger to the motorists.
