PORVORIM
Work on the Socorro sports complex which was stopped for nearly a year following the death of the contractor has resumed with the appointment of a new contractor by the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC).
The GSIDC had invited fresh tenders on February 23 from contractors for the completion of the remaining work at an estimated cost of Rs 11.33 crore. The tenders were opened on March 14 and the tender was awarded to a new contractor.
Speaking to The Goan, Tourism Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the new contractor appointed by GSIDC has already started the work on the Socorro sports complex.
“A meeting of GSIDC officials and the contractor was convened in the sports complex to discuss the works to be taken on priority basis,” said Khaunte.
“Construction of the sports complex at Socorro was started in 2014 and was to have been completed by 2015. Work on this major project is hanging in the balance for the last eight years for one reason or the other.”
The minister said this sports complex has a swimming pool and other facilities such as badminton courts, table tennis courts, squash courts, basketball court, football ground, gymnasium, multipurpose hall, library, changing rooms, lockers and a kids play area.
“The contractor has been directed to complete the work of the swimming pool and other sports related work on priority basis,” said Khaunte.
“After discussing the matter with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, the tender for the internal finishing work of the sports complex will be issued. The contractor has assured to complete the work of the swimming pool, etc. and the interior work also by February/March 2024. Once this project is completed, residents of Porvorim and nearby areas will get all sports facilities under one roof,” he added.
