Residents of Sao Jose de Areal led by Sarpanch Linda Fernandes, Deputy Sarpanch Valente descended at the Maina Curtorim police station on Wednesday evening in connection with the uproar witnessed at the Comba area of the village between local residents and a landlord.
Maina Curtorim PI Arun Desai had invited the residents as well as the landlord to hear the two sides after the uproar witnessed earlier this week.
After the meeting, ex-Curtorim ZP member Moreno Rebello told the media that no one will be able to evict the people staying on the plot of land.
“These people have been staying on the land for decades. They just cannot be told to move out from their place of occupation”, he said.
In fact, Moreno dared anyone to evict the poor people, mostly belonging to the ST community, from the land.
What brought the people and the landlord face to face was that the latter had put machinery in his land, which the local panchayat had tried to stop on the plea no permission was obtained from the panchayat body.
The landlord, on the other hand, demanded to know whether the owner requires any permission to put machinery on his own property, saying a portion of his land has been allegedly encroached.
