Sardinha down but not out on his advice rejection

MARGAO: South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha on Wednesday said the Congress party’s stakes would have gone very high had the Party High Command followed his suggestion for a change in the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) leadership.

He, however, hastened to add that it is now his duty to see that the party comes up even though the decision of the Party High Command on the GPCC leadership is not to his liking.

Sardinha offered not to comment on a query whether the appointment of Alexio Sequeira will help the party allay apprehensions that the minorities are alienated from the party.

The MP made it clear that he cannot work miracles for the party, but would work for the betterment of the party, at least in the South Goa district.

When the media sought to know how he visualize the future of the Congress since his repeated pleas to change the Party president has failed to find favour with the party leadership, Sardinha shot back “if the party High Command had to follow what he had said, the party would have gone very high. However, as a MP belonging to the party, even if the party decision is not to his liking, it is my duty to see the Congress party comes up. I cannot work miracles, but I can work for the betterment of the party in South Goa”.

The MP further said those who want to join the Congress are welcome, but made clear that the new entrants should not come for the sake of ticket, but to make sure that they make the Congress win the election. “Which party doesn’t want more candidates to join people. We have to make sure that we win the next elections”, he added.

While extending Ganesh Chathurti greetings, the MP cautioned the people to celebrated the festival by following the SOPs in place.

Meanwhile, the MP demanded regularization of the contract workers who have completed more than five years of services before going in for new recruitment. “We have no problems if the government goes for filling up vacancies, but they should see that the contract workers are not left out”, he said.

Questioning the delay in sanctioning compensation to the people of Nanus in Usgao hit by rains, the MP demanded that the government sanction compensation to the people out of the Rs 300 crore funds received from the centre.

He demanded early resumption of mining activities in the state and reiterated his stand on legal sand mining.
